Хетероплазмия – скритата индивидуалност на нашите митохондрии

Heteroplasmy – the hidden individuality of our mitochondria

Each of our cells contains hundreds, even thousands of mitochondria—the small energy “power plants” of the body. Interestingly, they are not always identical. Some mitochondria may carry completely healthy mitochondrial DNA, while others have minor mutations or structural damage. This phenomenon is called mitochondrial heteroplasmy.

What does this mean in practice?

When mitochondria within the same cell differ in quality, the balance between the “stronger” and the “weaker” ones determines the cell’s actual energy capacity. In some people, this balance is more critical—certain organs or systems turn out to be more vulnerable, even though this does not represent a disease in the classical sense.

For example:

  • Muscles may have lower energy capacity, leading to quicker fatigue.

  • The heart or nervous system may respond more sensitively to stress and lack of sleep.

  • Certain tissues may age faster and become an individual’s “weak point.”

These effects often go unnoticed because the body finds ways to compensate, but over time or under greater stress, the differences become more apparent.

Why is heteroplasmy important?

  • It helps explain why some people have greater endurance, while others tire more quickly.

  • It provides insight into individual predispositions—not necessarily to disease, but to weaknesses that may intensify with age.

  • It highlights the role of mitochondria as a key factor in personal resilience and quality of life.

How can we influence it?

Although we cannot directly change the genetic “mix” of our mitochondria, there are ways to support their capacity:

  • regular physical activity and good oxygen exchange;

  • quality sleep and addressing sleep apnea or other breathing problems;

  • nutrition and supplements that support mitochondrial function (e.g., CoQ10, PQQ, urolithin A).

Heteroplasmy is not a diagnosis, but a natural feature of our biology. It shapes our personal “energy map”—the areas where we are stronger and those that may be more vulnerable. Understanding it helps explain why certain weaknesses accompany us throughout life and how we can balance them through lifestyle choices and conscious care for our mitochondria.
